48 Days ’til NX35 2010
Word on the street is that NX35 wristbands are selling like hotcakes (or waffles, if that’s your thing) so to all of you who are inquiring about the schedule, just go ahead and buy the 4-day wristband and thank me later. I don’t know what kind of “funky math” they are using to figure out when to stop selling tickets but I do know that Denton is a small town with small venues so there might just be a chance of a sellout crowd. So act fast, don’t delay, go!
In case you need more reason to go, here is one:
Sarah Jaffe
The first time I heard of Sarah Jaffe was when my buddies from Bosque Brown invited me to their show at NX35 last year. They were excited because they knew she would bring in a good crowd. I duly noted Jaffe’s name in my mental Rolodex and a couple of months later, I attended the Querencia Community Bike Shop Benefit Show where a good crowd was surely present, and I was won over as soon as she opened her mouth. There are some artists / bands you can listen to in your car and it’s just as good, if not better, than their live shows. But not Jaffe. Yes, most definitely buy her tunes but more importantly, attend her shows.
Since then, I have hit up most of her Denton shows, most notably last week’s show at St. David’s Episcopal Church. A brilliant idea to begin with (many kudos to The Hope Trust‘s Andy Odom and Midlake‘s Eric Pulido for making this happen), the scene was set perfectly for the lineup: Seryn, Robert Gomez, and Sarah Jaffe. Gone were the clanking of beer bottles and the chitter chatter of the uninterested. Especially for Jaffe’s set, the crowd was so quiet and captivated, you could hear people breathing as she delicately played “Two Intangibles” and finger tapped through “Stay With Me.” Perfectly backed by Robert Gomez’s calming voice and added atmospheric sounds, Jaffe’s voice and lyrics causes my heart to both break and awaken with every show. In a good way, of course. You just can’t experience this through your iPod. You must go and see.
Notable tunes to preview online: “Even Born Again,” “Stay With Me,” and bonus track from her previous project, Tomahawk Molly, “I Wish My Name Were Clementine” / Myspace / Facebook
