I wonder if the NX35 crew ever sleeps during the few months prior to the conferette. I wonder if they remember what the blue skies look like or if they remember to feed their pets. I wonder these things because in addition to the 123 bands announced last week, they just announced 45 more bands to the lineup. !!! And if my math serves me right, that means a heck of a lot of Sonicbids submissions someone had to filter through and a heck of a lot of bands to schedule. And thanks to them, we’ll have a heck of a lot of bands to check out in March. In keeping with the spirit of spicing things up this week, here is a dance break to celebrate:
Yeahdef
If you’re a twentysomething in Denton and haven’t been to an 80′s or 90′s night at Hailey’s, you’re missing out on some time traveling fun with Yeahdef. As he stated in an interview with Porch of the Mystics, he will hide gems throughout his mixes – “something that shows the freaks on the floor that I did homework.” Admittedly, I’ve only been to a handful of these nights so I can’t name any specific gems but what I do know is that Yeahdef knows his stuff. He keeps the beats fresh and the kids dancing. If you’re in Denton on a Tuesday or Thursday night and need a routine break, go see what I’m talking about and tell me you didn’t end up on the dancefloor lookin’ like a fool. Also, count how many times you think, “Oh! I remember this!”
Yeahdef’s craft is something I wish I knew more about so I could further appreciate the time and effort behind the beats. Time signatures, BPMs, dials and knobs, beeps and boops, I can’t imagine the hours dedicated to his art. And on top of that? A ridiculous schedule. On top of his day job as a computer technician and slated to graduate from UNT in May, his nights are almost booked solid with gigs. And if that isn’t enough? He even put together a show at Dan’s Silverleaf to promote new local acts in town recently. No wonder Yeahdef won Best DJ at the Dallas Observer music awards last year. He busts his tail so you can shake yours.
Check yeahdef.com for the next time you can dust off your dancing shoes and be sure to schedule some time to dance at NX35.
Notable tunes to preview online: Michael Jackson “Break of Dawn” (yeahdef’s dusk edit), Neon Indian “7000 (Reprise)” (yeahdef’s remix) / Soundcloud / Twitter
