Countdown to NX35 2010: 42 days ’til ridiculousness.

Alright, alright, I said I was going to venture out this week but I’m coming back to Dallas for this one. I’m also breaking my unspoken rule of avoiding bands that NX35, MyDentonMusic, and other blogs have mentioned recently but I’d be doing you an injustice if I don’t talk about them now. Don’t worry, I’m still staying away from my comfort genres (indie pop, indie folk, anything with acoustic guitars or Melodicas) so read on and see why I’m breaking all the rules for this post.

Giggle Party

Not to sound like The Schoolhouse is paying me or anything (they really aren’t, wait, how do they make money? Do you make money, Charlie?!) but yes, that photo was taken at their Fight Night back-to-school event last September. Evident in the photo is the silly string but what the picture happened to miss was the “cupcake icing, malt liquor, silly string and sweat” also present as reported by one brave Dallas Observer, um, observer. Yes, you must be brave to go to a Giggle Party show but by “brave,” I mean “willing to leave your pride and pretentiousness at the door”… which I think is pretty brave to do in Dallas. Once you leave behind your inhibitions, you can truly appreciate Giggle Party for what they are. Ridiculous.

I dragged my friends around last year’s Dallas Observer Music Awards Showcase which included checking out Giggle Party for the first time. I was a little more prepared than my friends were but it still took me a few songs to warm up to the frantic beats and screaming / singing as well as the absence of the guitarist. Well, I mean, he was there but through a projector. Not kidding, they managed to record a video of him playing along, superimposed him on some other videos, and played along with him. Bubbles and balloons were involved, and yes, they wore those same bright colored t-shirts you see above. They take being silly quite seriously.

Self-described as a “four-piece party punk rock band,” you either love them for what they are or not. You cannot ignore them. My friends decided they were “too cool for school” at the showcase and nervously stood around as party favors were tossed about. But, no doubt they still remember Giggle Party. As for me, I cannot wait until the next time I can catch one of their shows, preferably in a house and with cupcakes involved. Until then, here’s the great part (and the reason I decided to break my rules today), they are releasing a new song every week until April which is when they will release their first full-length album. You can read about the details at partytodeath.com and download a free track now. If that’s not enough for you, you can also download their debut EP, “The Holes in Your Face Are Pleasing,” for free! Geez, how does anyone make money around here?!

Bonus: If you like visuals (and you’re not at work, NSFW!) check out this animated video created for Giggle Party. It has a robot. Watch it.

Thanks for the kind words, we’re also playing a show on Saturday FREE at Kettle Art Gallery in Deep Ellum. But the best part is the guy that did all the art in the video above is selling his art. He came all the way from the UK. He’s awesome, everyone should come out.
