Countdown to NX35 2010: 41 days ’til genres collide!
Welcome to the end of the week, folks. For all of you who survived, hopefully you have enough energy (and haven’t packed up your winter coats yet) for some great shows this weekend. Check out some of the great shows in Dallas and Spune’s 2K10 Winter Dance Party which should give you a good idea on what you’ll be missing out on if you don’t go ahead and buy a NX35 wristband now! Seriously, they have sold out of single Saturday night wristbands already!
I’d like to take a minute of your time to thank those who have encouraged me in this fifty-day adventure. I know it’s only been nine days in but this blog requires a bit more time and work than I had initially thought! However, thanks to NX35 programming, the efforts have really paid off as I have discovered bands and artists I would have not normally listened to had I not started this journey (and I hope you have too!) 170 bands on the lineup and counting! Also, if you haven’t been able to tell by my lax informal writing style, I’m not a writer by day. Or night. I’m a computer geek who happens to enjoy music. A lot. So, to all who have taken the time to read along, hit the “like” button on Facebook, retweeted, and haven’t sent me hate mail, I thank you. I knew all those years of watching movies based on books in English class would pay off one day.
Ishi
Did I mention there’s a dance party this weekend? I don’t just suggest specific shows for word count or my good health but because you should go! Spune, the Texas-based Swiss Army knife of local music (artist development company, promoter, event producer, record label and booking agency) is going to help you forget your winter troubles or your already looming amount of homework by giving you every reason to dance the night away at their 2k10 Dance Party this Saturday night at Hailey’s. Local favorite, Yeahdef (why does that name sound familiar?), will be the deejay while Austin’s own Neon Indian finishes out the night. In the middle? A little bit of Ishi.
If you’ve been keeping up, you know that I lean toward indie folk but I also like some dancing synth-infused beats. So why hasn’t anyone told me about Ishi??? Described as “folk-tronic,” Dallas-based Ishi is where acoustic guitars and singalong melodies meet synths and MIDI controllers. The problem I have with purely electronic music is that it all begins to sound the same. And I usually can’t hum along. Sure, sometimes dance outfits throw in some lyrics but really, who wants to go “around the world” fifty times? Frontman John T. Mudd’s buttery smooth vocals perfectly blend with co-founding member, Brad Dale, and his array of atmospheric electric sounds so any repetition is purposeful and welcome. At least, I know I welcome them.
In case my rambling didn’t convince you to see them Saturday night or to buy a NX35 wristband, perhaps this unofficial video of Ishi’s “Pastel Lights” with clips of ’80s movie, Solarbabies, will convince you:
