Countdown to NX35 2010: 39 days ’til they stop adding bands to the lineup.
Last week, I jokingly suggested to NX35 volunteer coordinator, Shannon Goleman, that I would e-mail her a picture of a blue sky so she could post it in the NX35 office to remind them of the world outside. I’m starting to think I really should because it is becoming more apparent that the administrators of this music conferette are putting in extra hours to make this the best event possible. As if there isn’t already enough to figure out, they announced the addition of five more bands to their lineup. And there’s something that tells me that they still have some tricks up their sleeves. So, make sure you show your appreciation for the gluttons of punishment, the NX35 administrators, by purchasing an all-access wristband now!
Telegraph Canyon
If you keep up with the local DFW music scene at all, certainly you have heard of Telegraph Canyon. If not, start paying attention and you will notice their names are plastered all over the area with critics gushing over this seven-piece band from Fort Worth, Texas. I experienced this Baader–Meinhof phenomenon when I did my homework from the Dallas Observer Music Awards showcase last year. I decided to close out the night with their show and… wow. It’s one of the few shows I went to last year where the crowd was packed but we were so captivated, we were in silence. How they manage to get seven band members in sync with such intricacies in their music is something that separates the good from the best. It’s no wonder that shortly after I attended that show, I realized that they have already received the praise they deserve and it keeps on coming. Another “Why didn’t I know about this band before?” moment.
Dallas Observer chose “Shake Your Fist” as the best song in Dallas last year, newly-founded KXT chose it for their inaugural song from the local scene, and now they are one of the five bands to be added to NX35 2010′s growing lineup. Go ahead, listen to “Shake Your Fist” and tell me you aren’t interested in seeing this indie folk powerhouse live. Would it help if I told you that in addition to their accordion, acoustic and electric guitars, banjo, violin, organ, drums, and extra percussive instruments, they also manage to throw in a little toy piano? They manage to create a massive sound (did I mention there are seven of them?) yet they include quiet, soft moments (get lost in the moment with “Welcome to the Night”) in which you will notice the whole room is holding their breath along with yours. Make sure you see what everyone in Texas is talking about in March as this bandwagon is legit, y’all.
