Countdown to NX35 2010: 38 days ’til you’re uncontrollably bobbing your head.

Well, it’s Monday. And if you happened to hit up any of the many shows this weekend, then you’re probably just now recovering from all the good times you had. I know I am. Plus, to top it off, the sun is nowhere to be found. In fact, you’ll probably be hunting for the sun all week long. But not to fret, I will help you and your cup of coffee jump start your day. Your week. Heck, your month. No long intro today, let’s just get to it!

Mount Righteous

My blog stats page is interesting as I’ve watched traffic swell since I started this countdown, noted Brazilians reading my post over Natalia Mallo, and smiled knowing that a few of you geeks out there use Linux (sudo get NX35 tickets!) But, what I wish it told me is how many of you were in marching band in high school. Then I would know how many of you were probably made fun of as you adorned your heavy uniform, marched into strange formations (how do directors decide what weird shape you’re going to make?) and played a marching band rendition of “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” or “Mustang Sally.” Because then we could bond over these awkward memories over a cold one and hit up a Mount Righteous show together.

This nine-piece “anti-orchestra” claims Grapevine, Texas as home but are currently out and about, having kicked off this year’s tour schedule at Andy’s in Denton and are marching almost non-stop around the States until NX35. All of the usual indie folk/pop instruments are present – guitar, drums, bells, and Melodica – but with a marching band twist. Sousaphone! Trombone! Trumpet! Flute! I know my trumpet is packed away at my parents’ house, collecting layers of dust, but this band embraces their instruments and as you listen to their tunes, you’ll want to embrace them too. Although I haven’t hit up any of their shows (yet!) I can’t imagine people sitting still during their energetic and catchy songs. Listen to “When the Child Awakes” and “The Feeling You Bring” and let me know if you want to grab a stein and dance with me at NX35. Also, bonus tip: Play “You! The Magic Number” for your sweetie on Valentine’s Day.

Catchy is the word for their music.
