Countdown to NX35 2010: 37 days ’til we wave goodbye to winter*
Happy Groundhog Day, groundhogs! Apparently, we’re in for a long winter since Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow today so that means six more weeks of me moping and deeply longing for the sun’s warm embrace. I was going to choose a band that accurately mirrors my disdain for the winter cold but instead, I have chosen one that helps me forget about my high gas bill. Also, for you strange people that love the lifeless air of winter, this can act as a soundtrack for your celebration.
Jookabox
Listening to Jookabox is like taking a trip (and you can decipher that word usage as you please) as David Adamson, the brains of this project, pulls a wide array of sounds and influences into his songs. From the slow chain-gang sound in “Light My Bedroom From Below” to the frantic strumming in “You Cried Me” (and its equally amusing animated video), Jookabox does not lend to predictable ways.
Since I’m pressed for time, check out Jookabox’s myspace to read what the press is saying and listen to a few of the tunes to get a feel of what I simply cannot describe. If you’re as pressed for time as I am, just listen to “The Girl Ain’t Preggers” as many times as you can because it’s ridiculously catchy and it’ll be one of the few songs you’ll ever hear that uses the word “preggers” and that fact alone is worth the listen.
And, as always, here is your friendly invite to come welcome Jookabox as they trek from Indiana to little ol’ Denton, Texas.
Notable tunes to preview online: “The Girl Ain’t Preggers,” “The One Thing” / Myspace / Facebook
