Countdown to NX35 2010: 36 days ’til hip hop visits Denton*

Sorry for the late posts recently as work is kicking my face this week. And I had to watch Lost last night. Twice. Apparently two hours of Lost wasn’t enough WTF?! for me. As a result, I haven’t had enough time to finish listening to the entire NX35 lineup, let alone read all of the hoopla over Midlake’s new album. I know Pitchfork is kind of a big deal, but when does one music web site make or break how you feel about an an album? It shouldn’t, so don’t take what one site says so seriously. Especially mine. I don’t! Now, on to the thirteenth stop on our journey to NX35!

Sore Losers

To be honest, I don’t listen to much hip hop. I can barely remember the lyrics to my favorite songs, let alone remember the words to an entire rap song. Also, I’m not very good at shakin’ what my mama gave me. But sometimes, oh sometimes, my friends and I want to crank up something funky in the car and head to the nearest dance floor. Because let’s face it, it’s hard shakin’ it proper to indie folk.

Enter Sore Losers. I knew I had heard of them before but couldn’t quite remember why. A little googling reminded me of the online uproar on Dallas Observer’s site last year. The newspaper announced their nominees for their annual music awards and nowhere on the list was Sore Losers. However, if you scroll down and read all of the readers’ comments, you will see Sore Losers’ fan base representing. And after listening to their tunes on Myspace, even as an outsider to the hip hop scene, I can see why they were disappointed that the DOMA showed no love for this rapper/producer duo. However, before the year ended, the Dallas Observer noted Sore Losers’ collaboration with electronic-powered Fizzy Dino Pop and ranked the remix of “Bizarre Celebrations” as the fourth best song in Dallas music. Hopefully, that provided some consolation to their fan base and more than likely added to their numbers. I know they’ve got at least one new fan that is looking forward to shakin’ it with them soon.

Notable tunes to preview online: “Bizarre Celebrations,” “Spoil Me (featuring Muffy)” / Myspace / Facebook

*Actually, Sore Losers will join Fizzy Dino Pop at Cold Fusion for a free show in Denton this Saturday! Yes, free!
