Countdown to NX35 2010: 33 days ’til you meet the baby cousin.
Remember that time a certain internet publication referred to NX35 as SXSW’s baby cousin? Well, the baby has grown a bit more since the nod as ten more bands have been officially added to NX35 2010’s lineup. And, until the schedule is released, we can count on this lineup to make its way toward and perhaps beyond the 200 mark. Where they plan on cramming everyone is still a mystery to me but you most definitely need to purchase a wristband so we can show Austin that we aren’t just its baby cousin.
Unwed Sailor
I figure I’ve posted enough upbeat, danceable bands this week to warrant a change in pace. Sometimes you just need to relax and that’s exactly what I’m going to do today. Okay, so I’m going to relax and work on some personal projects but that’s different than office work, right? Well, when I’m working at home, especially if I’m reading or writing, I don’t just listen to any kind of music. I tend to lean toward the non-lyrical side so I’m less distracted. Unwed Sailor is perfect for that.
Unwed Sailor is the instrumental post-rock band based in Tulsa, Oklahoma created by Johnathan Ford, ex-bassist for Roadside Monument and Pedro the Lion. In fact, David Bazan played drums for Ford for a bit as one of the many members Ford has recruited. Regardless of the lineup, Unwed Sailor consistently manages to create a lyrical sense without a vocalist but through their electric and bass guitars. And I think that is what helps separate them from the many bland, instrumental projects out there. For fans of Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai, and for those that need a break from vocalists in March, definitely check out Unwed Sailor.
Notable tunes to preview online: “Copper Islands,” “Ruby’s Wishes” / Myspace / Facebook
