Countdown to NX35 2010: 30 days ’til beep boop boop, beep boop boop.
Goodness. Thirty more days, y’all. Are you ready? Okay, sure, the schedules are not out yet but we can discuss other things. Like how are you going to get to each NX35 venue? Easy. Denton Pedicab. What is there to eat around the square? J&J’s pizza. Beth Marie’s ice cream. If you’re over at Industrial Street, there’s Rooster’s (BBQ), Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Hot Box Pizza, and Thai restaurant, Andaman, just relocated to the corner across from Dan’s. Of course, these are all Nina-approved as I have eaten at all of these establishments within the past month. It only seems fitting to support local businesses while at a community-run music conferette, and if you need any more suggestions for what to do / eat / drink / visit while you’re in Denton, let’s discuss. Perhaps I’ll whip up a little guide as the festival draws nearer but I just wanted to get you out-of-towners a little something to think about as you start to make plans. Now I’m hungry.
French Horn Rebellion
If you’re not an out-of-towner (or, out-of-metroplexer) and you like to dance, then you might have been at Spune’s 2k10 Winter Dance Party. If not, then you missed out on the craziest madness I have ever witnessed at Hailey’s. When I arrived just before Ishi took stage, the crowd was already in full groove, and it wasn’t long after Neon Indian’s set started that body surfing commenced. Madness, I tell ya. I don’t hit up many electronic acts live because I like to watch musicians do their thing. And for me, it’s weird to watch people stand on stage and mash buttons and keys. But if that’s your thing, or if you need a reason to shake your hips and throw your hands in the air like you just don’t care, then you’ll enjoy French Horn Rebellion.
The brother duo known as French Horn Rebellion doesn’t include as much French horn as it does beeps and boops. And some of the most poppy fun beeps and boops you’ll hear at NX35. Robert Perlick Molinari actually started his music journey with hopes to become a professional French horn player as he went to college on a music scholarship but it was his mother’s gift that led to where the Molinaris are now. A copy of Logic 2 was the gateway they needed to start composing and producing, and eventually the itch to leave the traditional French horn for the modern day computer had to be scratched. If you start to feel overcome by all of the acoustic guitars during NX35, make sure to scratch the itch with French Horn Rebellion.
