Who was at their computer all day, constantly checking Myspace and Twitter as Bonnaroo gradually announced this year’s lineup? Although I didn’t (I’ve got other vacation plans in mind so I didn’t want Bonnaroo to talk me out of them), I watched my Twitter feed fill with Bonnaroo commentary. The music festival utilized social media in an interesting way which might have ended in more frustration than fun (Myspace? Really?) but you have to give them credit. They recognize social networking sites as very strong communication tools, and even though the process drove the impatient mad, it got people talking. And, I hope we fill the internet tubes with NX35 news more and more as we get closer to conferette.

Alright, enough geek speak, and on to today’s pick.
This Will Destroy You
I was going to post a band that went along with the whole electronic-age / Facebook / Twitter / sites-with-ridiculous-names vibe but as I was writing the paragraph above, I needed some music. As I’ve mentioned before, I read and write best with non-lyrical tunes, so I queued up This Will Destroy You. Best choice I’ve made all day.
Hailing from San Marcos, Texas, This Will Destroy You should be a favorite of any fan of Mogwai, Mono, their neighbors, Explosions in the Sky, and fellow NX35 band, Unwed Sailor. Like many musicians, they have admitted to comparisons as “aggravating” but if you start a Pandora or Last.fm station with This Will Destroy You, within three songs, you will hear one of those aforementioned bands. But, that’s not to say “they all sound the same!” because they all bring different plates to the post-rock table. It’s hard to explain without spending my entire day pointing out every nuance between all of the bands so I’m going to pull a Reading Rainbow on you today and will just tell you to listen for yourself. I think you either embrace post-rock instrumental bands or claim boredom, so you can decide. As for me, I’m going to get some work done with the ebb and flow of This Will Destroy You keeping me company.
Notable tunes to preview online: “Quiet,” “A Three Legged Workhorse” / Myspace / Facebook
