Countdown to NX35 2010: 18 days ’til the crowd goes wild.

Even if you’ve never played sports, never watched sports, or base your fantasy football picks off your favorite colors, you gotta watch the Olympics. I’m actually watching the preliminary hockey game between USA and Canada, and it’s crazy! I’ve seen quite a few NHL games before but nothing has matched up to the intensity these guys are playing at right now. You cannot deny the passion every Olympian has for their sport. It shows. There’s something about watching someone doing the very thing they love that is contagious and inspiring. I’m not saying you’ll see the world’s best at NX35 but you are going to see musicians who spend countless hours practicing, recording, setting up and tearing down their stages, and when they aren’t working on their own gig, they are still listening, still thinking about music. And don’t let the media fool you. Most musicians don’t travel by limo, own mansions, and own hundred dollar bills, y’all. Most of them don’t actually make money once you factor in all the costs of equipment, recording, and touring. And yet, if you ask nicely, they’ll give you a song or album for free. Or, they’ll play at NX35 for your low, low price of $65 for a chance to share with you what they love. It’s gonna be contagious and inspiring.

Saboteur

I will be very, very surprised if a mosh pit doesn’t form in at least one NX35 show. Or, even some body surfing. Perhaps even some bruising or bleeding. It’s bound to happen. All in fun and good spirit, of course, as music makes people do the craziest things. And something might happen on the opening night of the music conferette at Hailey’s when Saboteur takes the stage. Admittedly, there will be a lack of punk-flavored bands but this Dallas-based punk rock band will try their best to make up for that void. Fast, crunching chords, driving bass lines, and that distinct punk yell are all present in this band that has shared the stage with punk favorites, Strung Out, Propagandhi and Pennywise. They aren’t your Hot Topic version of punk either (re: relax, all ye who hate Fall Out Boy) as their influences include The Clash, The Ramones, Black Flag and Alkaline Trio. Legit. If you want to start the weekend off with a bang, join Saboteur for an energetic set. No mohawks necessary.

Notable tunes to preview online: “This is a Bike Crime”, “Le Saboteur Produit Son Couteau” / Myspace / Facebook
