Countdown to NX35 2010: 17 days ’til you make a new friend.

You may not be looking to make new friends at NX35 but it’s gonna happen. You’re gonna drink a few, hit a show with some danceable beats and the next thing you know, you’re smiling at the person next to you as if to say, “Man, this is fun. Isn’t this fun? You look fun.” Maybe that’s the extent of your new friend interactions but Texans are a friendly bunch. Someone might buy you a cold one or invite you along to the next show on his or her list. You never know but keep an open mind. You’re supposed to have fun at music festivals so don’t take life so dang seriously for a weekend and go with the flow. If we happen to cross paths, I’ll be more than happy to meet you. See? One guaranteed new friend. If you don’t give me the creepy eye.

The Middle East

This band totally snuck into the lineup recently. No fanfare, no blurb. They just showed up. I’m writing this to point out the fact that this band will be making its way to the States from Australia (yes, the continent and country!) and stopping by this little music festival. Actually, The Middle East will be joining two other international acts, The Kissaway Trail (Denmark) and Autumn Owls (Ireland), to help close out NX35 at Andy’s on Sunday night. If you’re a local and tired of the local cuisine, that will be a good showcase to visit. Especially if you have exhausted yourself and need to kick back a little.

The Middle East brings a gentle sound along with gentle harmonies from a country is better known for bringing rock acts like AC/DC, Wolfmother, and Jet. A softly finger-picked guitar often accompanies the female and male vocals that rise and swirl, beautifully and gracefully. But that’s not to say a gentle and soft sound can’t deliver as the build-up to the end of “Blood” is a celebrated one, a joyful fanfare of voices, trumpet, and glockenspiel. If you have a hard time finding this band, search for their album, The Recordings of The Middle East. You’ll find them there along with many much deserved rave reviews. Again, you can catch this rare showcase of international acts on the final night of NX35 at Andy’s.

Notable tunes to preview online: “Blood”, “The Darkest Side” / Myspace / Facebook
