Have you cats been to Weinberger’s Deli off Hickory and Industrial yet? They’ve only been open for five days and I’ve eaten there three of those days. The Thomas Kemper vanilla cream soda they serve is the nectar of the gods. And Weinberger’s ain’t the only one serving tasty food in the area. There’s Andaman, Rooster’s, Fuzzy’s, Ramen Republic, and the new pizza joint, Gio’s. Although I haven’t tried Gio’s, the others get my thumbs up of approval and I highly recommend all you out-of-towners grab a bite to eat at any of those places while you’re at 35 Conferette. They’ll be within festival grounds so I don’t see how you can avoid them. Perhaps I’ll put together an unofficial guide to Denton for you folks. Don’t let Denton’s small town feel fool you, we’ve got a lot to offer.
Eaton Lake Tonics / RTB2
It’s extremely hard to follow the Denton music scene without running into the tall, lanky madman that goes by the name of Ryan Thomas Becker. He’s another recurring character that frequents the town’s stages as you can find him in Eaton Lake Tonics, RTB2, Slow Burners, Hares on the Mountain, as well as making guest appearances in other bands and doing his own thing.
The first time I ever witnessed RTB2 was at NX35 last year and it was an experience I’ll never forget. Dan’s was packed, glasses and picks went flying, and Ryan Becker somehow managed to look both possessed and in control as he did unspeakable things to his electric guitar. Thankfully, Grady Don Sandlin laid the beats down, the foundation to the duo, or else I’m convinced Becker would take flight. An unbelievable show that left us all in awe, and if that wasn’t enough, most of us left with a free album, In People. What’s there not to like? They’ll be back for 35 Conferette, ready to melt more faces off.
Another chance to catch Becker at 35 Conferette is at Eaton Lake Tonics’ show. Comprised of current and former members of Matthew and the Arrogant Sea and headed by Tony Ferraro, this Denton/Fort Worth band brought rock amidst the sea of folk for six years. However, all good things must come to an end and split into different projects, and their 35 Conferette gig will actually be their farewell show. So, make sure your goodbyes aren’t final but that you thank the group for their years of service under the name Eaton Lake Tonics. Also, thank them for making their discography absolutely free. I ain’t joking. Download to your heart’s content here: http://eatonlaketonics.weebly.com. May Eaton Lake Tonics live on in your fancy music playing devices.
