The 30-Day Song Challenge: Day 11

Monday kicked my tail thoroughly but I’m still alive. However, the 30-Day Song Challenge was casualty but don’t worry, it was one of those non-fatal casualties. On the flip side, I think I have a general route ironed out for my road trip so that was a big victory. You win some, you lose some.

Day 11: A Song From Your Favorite Band: Jimmy Eat World “23″

Sooooo, through this challenge, I think I’ve come to realize that Death Cab for Cutie is my favorite band but to use another one of their songs seems like cheating. And no one likes a cheater, yeah? Jimmy Eat World is a close second though. I know, I know, I cringe a little when I hear “The Middle” too but Futures and the Stay On My Side EP played a key role in my transition out of college and into the “real world.” Also, much like Jimmy Eat World, I’ll always be a little emo. My apologies for the cheesy montage. I have no idea why Jimmy Eat World chooses their worse songs as singles and their better songs get the lame fan video treatment.

The 30-Day Song Challenge: Day 10

It’s Friday, y’all! Also, I think I type “y’all” more than I actually say it. Welp, enough chit chat and onto the 30-Day Song Challenge!

Day 10: A Song That I Can Fall Asleep To: John Williams “Theme From Schindler’s List”

Honestly, it’s hard for me to fall asleep while listening to music. My brain becomes engaged, my toes start tapping and I’m sure some adrenaline and endorphins are released in there somewhere. However, there is some music out there that will eventually sooth me into a peaceful state. Ironically, the theme song for a movie about the Holocaust is one of those songs that can lull me into slow breathing and a clear state of mind. Also ironic is that I would study to this soundtrack as I could unfold math equations without the music overpowering and hogging all my brain cells. And yes, I also cry when I watch this movie. Damn you, John Williams. And damn you, Hitler.

The 30-Day Song Challenge: Day 9

I’ve got a full plate of new projects and ideas which should spice up this blog a bit soon but for now, you’ll have to settle for the daily posts as I tackle the 30-Day Song Challenge. But, admit it, the countdown hasn’t been half bad, has it?

Day 9: A Song I Can Dance To: Michael Jackson “Beat It”

I’m a terrible dancer. Thanks to video games and computers, I ain’t bad with the whole hand-eye coordination bit. But, body-eye coordination? Or, even just plain body coordination? I’m like a white dude dancing. However, somewhere in my parents’ collection of home videos or photographs, there is evidence that I used to love me some Michael Jackson. Okay, I still do but I don’t moonwalk across coffee tables anymore. Apparently, my parents loved it when I did that. If YouTube existed back then, I’m sure my family would have at least 75 trillion theoretical dollars from those videos going viral. Too bad. You can still catch me tapping my toe to this song though.

The 30-Day Song Challenge: Day 8

Did you have MTV when you were a kid? I didn’t. I didn’t have extended cable so we didn’t have MTV or Nickelodeon which accounts for my blank look when you start talking about old music videos or green slime. So, thanks to the 30-Day Song Challenge, I realized I had never seen the music video to the song I chose below… until now.

Day 8: A Song I Know All The Words To: Green Day “Basketcase”

I have the worst memory when it comes to lyrics. I’ll remember the melody or when to cue the one triangle “ding!” or the little drum fill between the verse and the chorus but I couldn’t sing you my favorite songs if my life depended on it. But, there was a time when I remembered friend’s phone numbers and memorized the little details about every album I owned like who produced it and when. That magical time was in junior high and I imagine I remembered life a little better because I was confined to my house for most of it. Yeah, strict parents, woo! When you don’t have a TV in your room, you get to know your album collection really well (I had both CD and tapes then, old school, what?) and try to hog the family’s phone line as much as possible for a taste of the outside world. I may be exaggerating but who didn’t over dramatize life back then? Anyway, long story short, I think I could sing you “Basketcase” without any help of the Google, if necessary. I loved that album then and you know, I think I still do.

The 30-Day Song Challenge: Day 7

I’ve gotten carried away planning for a cross country trip to the west coast. I’m not sure if I left out hyphens and proper capitalization in that sentence. But, I’m too lazy to look it up. Yeah, that’s right. Weird, huh? However, I’m not too lazy to continue with the 30-Day Song Challenge!

Day 7: A Song That Reminds Me of a Certain Event: Louis Armstrong “What a Wonderful World”

If you were at The Flaming Lips show at NX35 last year, you understand this decision. If you were at The Flaming Lips show at NX35 and you were a volunteer who busted tail for the weekend, you understand this decision. If you were at The Flaming Lips show at NX35 last year and made the Saturday beer run, having to deal with downtown square traffic and having Jimmy at Dan’s yell at you twice, then you understand this decision and why it was fitting to hug and slow dance to this song while balloons and streamers still floated along the night sky. And you also understand why I wrote a ridiculous run-on sentence.
